I'm sitting here watching the Chris Mathews show and he had on a Congresswoman from Minnesota by the name of Michele Bachmann. Representative Bachmann spewed the kind of McCarthyism I haven't seen since I was a kid (yes I'm that old). She said a lot of dumb things and I have to wonder how this airhead ever got elected. Where do I start? Well, let's start with Obama's association with Bill Ayers. Chris Mathews played a new McCain robocall for her and she started carrying on about how the American public needs to find out "more" about the "close" relationship between Ayers and Obama who are both mentioned in the call. Although Mathews pointed out that Obama was 8 years old when the weathermen set off bombs in protesting the Vietnam war... and they always proceeded by a phone call to evacuate the targeted building, Representative Bachmann simply smiled and continued her rhetoric about associations Obama had, and that this was more important than the prime issues of the day. Incidentally, the weathermen were not about killing people, they were all about stopping the war in Vietnam, which sounds strangely like DejaVu all over again.... the United States sacrificing its finest young men in a war against a people who never attacked us.
Bachmann went back to the association issues and made note that the robaocall said they killed people. The truth was that one policeman died, and two weathermen members were also killed when they were trying to build a bomb. She also made note that Bill Ayers said on 9/11 that he wanted to bomb more, and that has been proven to be a misquote. Ayers had said he "wished we had done more" with the we being Americans in general, and that more people should have peacefully protested and voted out the politicians who wanted to keep us in that war. Her bottom line was that Barack Obama was working closely with terrorists and extreme left radicals right now! This woman is so pre-programmed its pathetic.
Rep. Bachmann then went even further over the top. She said that she thought the media should immediately investigate all the democrat members of congress to find out if they were closet terrorists (I'm paraphrasing on the description). I have to give Mathews credit for not up-chucking his dinner when he heard her suggest that we could possibly have Leftist-Extremists in the Congress. And of course, she never once suggested that there might be Right-Wing Extremists in congress on the other side of the aisle.
I'm a registered Republican, but I'm voting for Barack Obama for more reasons that I want to list here. I am very saddened by the tenor of the campaign, and most especially John McCain's gutter tactics. I realize nobody is perfect, but the citizens of Minnesota should be taking a long, hard look at Representative Bachmann, and perhaps consider returning her to the factory where they produce elected officials like herself and Sarah Palin. I would be embarrassed to admit she was representing me and my state.
Mathews actually kept his head, and then brought on Pat Buchanan and Katrina vanden Heuvel and they got into it as well. Buchanan was carrying on and said he agreed with everything Bachmann said other than the investigation of congress. Katrina was besides herself and rightly so as she was worried about the level of partisanship and hate that was being ratcheted up by McCain's operatives stunk of possible fascism.
Whew... if anyone else saw this exchange, you are probably feeling just as nervous as I am for this country.
